On behalf of the organising committee, it is my great pleasure to cordially invite your National Society and members of Emergency Communications Groups to participate in MyGAREC 2012, the 8th GAREC conference, which will be held on 12to 14th November, 2012 in Port Dickson, Malaysia.
This international conference, an informal forum by radio amateurs from societies worldwide, especially from those societies who are very active in the rapid provision of support communications to all the emergency and disaster-relief services in their countries in times of any emergencies or disaster, is hosted by MARTS (Malaysian Amateur Radio Transmitters’ Society) with the following aims:
To promote more awareness between government ministries, departments, agencies and regulatory authorities especially in those countries in Region III where the resources that can be provided by amateur radio volunteers have up till now remained almost-unused
To foster more information exchanges leading towards better utilization and coordination of amateur radio resources for emergencies and disaster relief communications, gaining a closer rapport between all of the above parties and eventually developing a high level of trust and reliance on the radio amateurs for the provision of such communications services.
To help the relevant departments or ministries in Malaysia look more positively towards eventually becoming a signatory in the Tampere Convention and its ratification in due course.

I regret to report that retired ARRL General Manager and past IARU President Richard L. Baldwin, W1RU, died Thursday morning, June 21. He was 92.
As ARRL Assistant General Manager Dick was the staff member who was primarily responsible for initiating preparations for the 1979 World Administrative Radio Conference and was one of the key players in formulating the objective of obtaining new amateur HF bands at 10, 18 and 24 MHz. As ARRL General Manager from 1975 to 1982 he played an essential role in turning that objective into reality.
Following his retirement from the ARRL staff Dick was elected President of the IARU, which he had served as Secretary from 1976 to 1982. He served as President for 17 years, managing the transition to a new Constitution that made the IARU a more representative body. Upon his retirement from that volunteer position in 1999 he was named President Emeritus by the IARU Administrative Council.
Funeral arrangements are being made through the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, Damariscotta, Maine.
Our IARU Region 1 Public Relations Coordinator Dennis, HB9EPA has for personal reasons resigned from this position. We take this opportunity to thank Dennis for his work for IARU and look forward to further cooperation in the future.
We are now urgently looking for his successor. Please let us know if you have a suitable and interested candidate in your National Society.
The planned work for 2012 is focusing on some major amateur radio events to get more media coverage in order to make our hobby better known. This would be achieved by providing press kits to the Member Societies.
Another task would be to provide an information package for European Members of Parliament to promote the value of Amateur Radio.
There will be several members of the IARU Region 1 management present in Friedrichshafen 22-24/6/2012. We would be pleased to discuss this issue with your representative there.
