Swiss radio amateurs receive official license,

start detailed planning for DXpedition to Côn Có Island

 

 

LUCERNE, SWITZERLAND, 15 September 2009 – Scheduling their activities for April 2010, an international group of amateur radio operators plans to conduct a DXpedition to a remote island off the coast of Vietnam. During their 2-week stay, they will make radio contacts with as many ham radio operators as possible around the globe. Running four stations 24 hours a day, they hope to reach 60,000 hams in that period.

 

In addition, the Vietnam telecom authorities have issued an official amateur radio license as required for any such activity; in this case, the call sign under which all radio communications will take place is 3W6C.

 

The multinational project, being coordinated by Swiss ham-radio operators, consists of roughly 20 individuals including one woman with members not only from Switzerland but also from Vietnam, Germany, USA and Japan.

 

The team members are starting to make the extensive preparations necessary for such a DXpedition. Côn Có Island, with a land surface of just 2 square kilometers, is 32 km off the central coast of Vietnam in the Gulf of Tonkin. The island has a population of approximately 400 people. For many years it was a restricted military zone, but today the Vietnamese government is working to turn this idyllic location into a tourist and vacation destination.

 

What is of special interest to ham operators is that this island has rarely seen any radio activity. Because it belongs to the popular Islands of the Air program (designation: AS-185), and the fact that Vietnam itself is high in the list of most-wanted countries for radio contacts, the DXpedition expects very high interest from the amateur radio community around the world.

 

The goal is to make contacts on as many different frequencies as possible, even in the 80 meter and 160 meter bands, which makes this DXpedition very special. But this goal also means that the group must transfer considerable amounts of equipment – including radios, antennas, power generators, computers, and various ancillary supplies – with them to the island.

 

The need for sponsors

 

In order to conduct such an extensive operation requires considerable financial resources. And while the team members are all making personal financial sacrifices to make this DXpedition possible, they are also dependent upon donations from many sources, whether individuals, ham-radio clubs or commercial sponsors. Schweizer Funkamateure erhalten die offizielle Lizenz
und beginnen mit der Detailplanung für eine DXpedition nach Côn Có Island

 

 

LUZERN (Schweiz), 15. September 2009  –  Eine internationale Gruppe von Funkamateuren plant für April 2010 die Durchführung einer "DXpedition" zu einer abgelegenen Insel vor der Küste Vietnams. DX ist ein Fachausdruck der Funkamateure und bedeutet "weit entfernt". Während ihres zweiwöchigen Aufenthalts wird die Gruppe so viele Funkkontakte wie möglich mit anderen Amateuren rund um den Globus herstellen. Mit vier Funkstationen im 24-Stunden-Betrieb möchte das Team in dieser Zeit rund 60'000 Funkamateure erreichen.

 

Vor wenigen Tagen hat die vietnamesische Telekommunikationsbehörde diese Funktätigkeit genehmigt und ihr das offizielle Amateurfunk-Rufzeichen 3W6C zugeteilt. Dieses Rufzeichen wird für alle Funkaktivitäten verwendet.

 

Etwa 20 Funkamateure gehören zum multinationalen Projektteam. Sie stammen hauptsächlich aus der Schweiz, aber auch aus Vietnam, Deutschland, Japan und den USA. Auch eine Frau gehört zum Team der DXpedition.

 

Nach Erhalt der Lizenz hat das Projektteam nun die intensiven Vorbereitungsarbeiten aufgenommen, ohne die eine grosse DXpedition nicht möglich wäre. Die Insel Côn Có befindet sich etwa 32 km vor der Küste Zentral-Vietnams am südlichen Ende des Golfs von Tonkin. Sie ist nur 2 Quadratkilometer gross und zählt rund 400 Einwohner. Während vieler Jahre war die Insel militärisches Sperrgebiet. Nun möchte die vietnamesische Regierung das idyllische Eiland touristisch entwickeln.

 

Da aufgrund der Zugangsbeschränkungen bisher kaum Funkverkehr mit Côn Có stattgefunden hat, ist die Insel für Funkamateure besonders interessant. Da sie zudem im beliebten "Islands on the Air" Programm zu einer selten aktivierten Inselgruppe gehört und Vietnam bei den Funkamateuren zu den hundert meist gesuchten Ländern zählt, rechnet das Team mit einem sehr grossen Interesse der weltweiten Funkergemeinschaft.

 

Das Hauptziel ist es, auf möglichst vielen verschiedenen Frequenzen Funkbetrieb zu machen, besonders auf dem 80-Meter- und 160-Meter-Band, was diese DXpedition zu etwas Besonderem macht. Das heisst aber auch, dass die Gruppe umfangreiche Gerätschaften auf die Insel mitbringen muss – Funkgeräte, Antennen, Generatoren, Computer und verschiedenste Zusatzgeräte.

 

Sponsoren gesucht

 

Ein Vorhaben in diesem Umfang benötigt beträchtliche finanzielle Mittel. Obwohl die Team-mitglieder umfangreiche Eigenleistungen selbst erbringen, ist die Gruppe doch vom Wohlwollen der Funkergemeinschaft abhängig, um weitere finanzielle Mittel von Funkamateuren, Amateurfunkvereinen oder kommerziellen Sponsoren zu erschliessen. Das Team der DXpedition nach Côn Có ist deshalb für alle kleinen und grossen Zuwendungen sehr dankbar.
